The education field has changed dramatically over the last few decades. Classroom-based classes have been replaced by online learning techniques which offer flexibility pre-recorded courses with class meetings that are held using videoconferencing software that can be used in real-time. Even these online methods might not be enough for students who prefer classrooms with real-time interaction.
Live online learning is a different strategy to other online education strategies. It permits students and instructors to interact in real-time via videoconferencing software like Zoom. The classes provide students with the opportunity to ask questions, clear up confusion, and gain more understanding of the course material.
While there are numerous benefits to using live learning, it can be difficult for some students to adjust to this kind of online learning. This study examines the students’ readiness for online learning and identifies core factors that impact this. The results reveal that most important factors that influence students’ readiness are motivation for learning online, self-directed learning ability. Researchers also conducted a post-hoc test and multi-group analysis to analyze gender differences among undergraduate or graduate students as well as sub-degree students. It was found that postgraduates have higher levels of preparedness in the majority of aspects of live education compared to undergraduate and sub-degree students.
It is recommended that instructors establish clear expectations for what students are expected to know and do prior to, during and after the Live Session. It is essential to provide additional materials like summaries and gist quizzes. Also, outline, concept maps, and study guides are useful. In addition, instructors should design activities that will reinforce what the students have learned on their own, for instance, by discussing, reviewing, arguing and analyzing.
